Clapham

Under Labour, Clapham has become the “forgotten” town centre with the swimming pool closed and the library under threat. Labour promised to “Keep Clapham Swimming” at the 2006 election but now the nearest pool is 20 minutes away by bus in Brixton.

We will:

  • Ensure a new pool and leisure centre opens in Clapham without delay.
  • Abandon Labour’s plans to shut Clapham Library.
  • Crack down on antisocial behaviour like street drinking in Clapham Town Centre, Old Town and Wandsworth Road.
  • Restrict the opening of new licensed premises, and the extending of existing opening hours: Clapham is an area saturated with licensed premises.
  • Take on board concerns raised by residents in relation to a proposed Town Square in the Old Town, and work closely with local residents to
develop proposals which address these concerns.
  • Carry out meaningful and early consultation on all future schemes before detailed plans are designed.
  • Give local residents a real say over how Clapham Common is managed.
  • Improve the maintenance of Clapham Common by restoring the bald grass areas and repairing the pond banks.
  • Reduce the size of the depot on Clapham Common to reinstate green common land.
  • Repair potholes and resurface where necessary roads which are in need.
  • Work with local tenant and resident associations and the police to eliminate the problem of antisocial behaviour including drinking on communal areas on our estates especially in the Wandsworth Road and Cedars Road areas.
